Cultural Space Merirasti is a cultural centre established in the decommissioned chapel of Meri-Rastila. When the parish left the premises in 2022, the building, designed by architect Kaarlo Leppänen, was at risk of being demolished at less than thirty years of age.
However, in September 2023, Cultural Centre Vuotalo leased the chapel to Teatteritalo Universum’s Story Sharing Universum project. This activity is part of an urban renewal project aimed at creating safe, comfortable, and inviting spaces for urban residents through art and culture.
The cultural space hosts various activities in collaboration with local residents, organizations, as well as the City of Helsinki, Kalliola Civic Institute, and other stakeholders.
The site will be presented by Matti Jänkälä, project worker and architect at the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum, along with the cultural space producers and house artists Max Bremer and Markus Luukkonen.
The site presentation accommodates 30 persons.

FIX: Care and Repair
In April 2024, the exhibition halls of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum will be taken over by the themes of renovation, maintenance, and cleaning. The exhibition FIX: Care and Repair brings together architecture, design, and contemporary art. The exhibition focuses on the repair of objects and buildings, the maintenance of the environment, cleaning, and the aesthetics of dirt and wear. The exhibition presents the museums as places of care, where collection management and conservation preserve carefully selected objects.
The FIX: Care and Repair exhibition is open at the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum from April 26 to December 31, 2024. The exhibition is curated by a working group from the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum.
