Design Gallery 12 Opening Doors on Contemporary Design in 2012
The Design Gallery 12 series of exhibitions and events addresses current themes and developments in domestic and international design. This internationally oriented series is part of the official programme of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012. The participants, consisting of twelve groups of designers, including individual designers, were chosen in the spring of 2011 from over 110 high-standard applicants. The final Design Gallery 12 programme will feature in the spring season Finnish Design Unwrapped, Unpolished – Polish Young Design, New Nordic Fashion Illustration, Kuvita! – Helsinki Illustration Festival 2012 and Pentagon Design 15, followed by Fiskars Design Village New & Classics, CTRL-clothing, Hanna Sarén & Juha Nenonen in the summer, and by Form of Sound – Mikko Paakkanen, Design Migration 10+ Views on Clay, the 2012 Kaj Franck Prize exhibition and Valohoito – Järvi & Ruoho in the autumn of 2012.
The exhibits of Design Gallery 12 have been chosen to represent the broad field of design and art as extensively as possible. International participants were sought to provide an interesting dialogue with Finnish design. It should be mentioned that the programme includes industrial design, applied art, fashion design, photography, furniture design, and audio and light works. Execution and realization range from exhibitions to different kinds of installations and total events.
Finnish Design Unwrapped presents the most interesting current work in Finnish design with objects by 19 designers and photographs by Jani Kaila. Finnish Design Unwrapped was on show in September 2011 as part of the WEDC Helsinki 2012 programme at the London Design Festivals. More information www.janikaila.com
Unpolished – Polish Young Design is an exhibition featuring the leading contemporary designers and product innovations ofPoland. Originally displayed inMilan in April 2011, this exhibition is curated by Agnieszka Jacobson Cielecka and Pawel Grobelny, experts of Polish and international design. New Nordic Fashion Illustration brings together fashion illustrators Marju Tammik, Anu Samarüütel-Long, Kätlin Kaljuvee and Leana Salvet of Estonia, Laura Laine and Minni Havas of Finland and Lovisa Burfitt and Cecilia Carlstedt of Sweden. The participants of this exhibition are all leading names in their field and their work has been seen in international media. Their clients include companies such as Zara, H&M, Swarowski and Tommy Hilfiger.
Kuvita! – Helsinki Illustration Festival 2012 discusses the professional identity of illustrators and considers the questions of who illustrators are and how the field of illustration is changing with the challenges of the opportunities and risks of new media. More information www.kuvittajat.fi
The Pentagon Design 15 anniversary exhibition presents an overview of the Pentagon Design agency’s work of the past fifteen years and its vision of new concepts for the next fifteen. The exhibits include a cross-section of the various areas of Pentagon Design’s work in product, spatial, graphic and service design. Fiskars Design Village New & Classics displays the most recent work by the designers of the Fiskars Cooperative and items by them that have become classics. This exhibition is in three departments: latest work, classics and a photo display of the wide range of skills represented by the Fiskars Cooperative. The exhibition working group consists of industrial designer Camilla Moberg, ceramist Karin Widnäs and industrial designer Barbro Kulvik. The exhibition architecture is by industrial designer Antti Siltavuori.
CTRL ”X” is a partly retrospective exhibition on the history of the CTRL brand since 1995. It reflects Finnish youth culture through the varied design world of the brand. CTRL has collaborated with, among others, ROCKERS NYC, XBOX, SABRE FM, STADIUM TOKYO, VICE MAGAZINE, FUCTORY TOKYO, ADIDAS, TUNTO, KOKOROMOI and ROCKERS NYC. It has organized exhibitions and pop up shops around the world. CTRL products are currently sold in 26 countries. The Hanna Sarén & Juha Nenonen Exhibition combines several art forms and media. It will open as a display of fashion design by Hanne Sarén, after which her collection will move to Design Gallery 12 to be shown among work by Juha Nenonen. Form of Sound – Mikko Paakkanen is an exhibition inspired by music, sound waves and interesting materials. It is a combination of sound and form. The works are being currently made in association withFinland’s best craftspersons and most interesting musicians.
Design Migration 10+ ” Views on Clay” is an anniversary exhibition by the Design Migration Association celebrating its over ten years of activities. The material frame of reference is clay, but this exhibition is not an overview of the past. Instead, it creates new things. It will include multidisciplinary designers who have participated in the Association’s previous products as well as young designers at the beginning of their careers.
The Kaj Franck Design Prize Exhibition 2012. Instituted in 1992, the annual Kaj Franck Design Prize maintains the legacy of designer Kaj Franck (1911 –1989), who was known as the “conscience of Finnish design”. The prize-winners represent the leading names of Finnish design in a wide range of fields. Valohoito (“LightTherapy”) – Järvi & Ruoho is an experiential, total spatial work employing large white balloons lit from within. The balloons are of different size and they change colour following a slow rhythm and passing through the whole spectrum.
